San Francisco: Treats from Tartine

Trip-to-Tartine

When I knew I was going out to San Francisco, I reached out to multiple friends for suggestions of where to go. Hands down the most votes went to Tartine bakery. Known for it’s fresh baked bread, Tartine will sometimes have lines that wrap around the corner. By the time I was able to make my way to Tartine, it was late afternoon and all of the bread was already sold out! The plus side however was that the line wasn’t too long.

I was a little disappointed that I wasn’t able to try the bread (just more reason to go back for a second visit). However, the glass cases were filled with more than enough pastries and sweet treats to keep me happy. When I’m visiting a new place, I like to sometimes put the decision making into the hands of the person who is there everyday and so I asked the wonderful employee behind the counter to surprise me and box me up an assortment of his favorite cookies. In addition to that, my friend ordered a slice of quiche.

The cookies ranged from the melt in your mouth crumbly type to the smooth and velvety ganache type. My favorite hands down was the salted rye. I’m usually pretty good about making sure I get all of the photos I want before chomping into anything but I was so excited to try this cookie that I completely forgot to take a photo! As you can guess, it’s the photo below with the bite mark in it. I would say this cookie was the perfect balance between salty and sweet with being less on the sweet side. I had never thought of making a rye cookie and have never tasted one before but next time when I return I would highly consider getting a full box of these!

The interior of the place is also absolutely charming. It’s filed with old school wooden back chairs that sit atop a tiled floor. We chose to eat outside since the weather was amazing. There was also a guitarist playing at the corner, which added to the ambience.

If you’re in San Francisco, don’t feel intimidated by the line at Tartine. I’m sure it will vary from day to day and time to time but from my experience, the line moved fairly quickly and was well worth the wait!

Yum! I used to live near SF and I loved Tartine. Seeing these treats is bringing back memories (and hunger pains!).
